Inside, you will find legendary photos and artifacts, friendly staff, and some of the best subs in Boston, along with some groovy, blues music. From the list of cold subs, I chose the Sammy's Special, their Italian with two extra layers of meat (like a boss), with everything.
This sub was mondo a la Meridian Market's Italian just down the street. The quality is very good, but it's not an elite level quality of meat. The bread is top-notch, and the array of toppings is what you would expect from a very good Italian. The hot relish, oil and vinegar, and oregano balance out the heart-stopping amount of delicious, cured, meat loaded into this sub. Plus, at $7.75 for a whole, it's a steal.
Because I was so enthralled with their array of subs, I returned a fortnight later to try their Steak Supreme sub with steak, salami, peppers, mushrooms, onions, and cheese. This is probably the best steak bomb within Boston limits. With the same good, crusty bread with the plush interior, the sub roll delightfully caresses the freshly-shaved steak, sliced salami, and vegetables all getting to know each other in the evenly, melted cheese.
Final bite, go to Carlo's. They've been doing their thing for 30 years, and doing it, and doing it, and doing it well.
